Velvet hosts the Velvet Junior Bike Race, which runs alongside the annual professional Northumbrian Water 'Tour of the Reservoir' Road Race. While the professionals battle it out, youngsters from Tynedale take part in the 1km fun ride to raise money for an artificial heart machine for Newcastle Freeman Hospital's Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).
